5 Tips to Create a Content Strategy in 2020

Updated: Jul 21, 2020

Would you like to create a successful content strategy in 2020?

Are you a professional speaker, author, or consultant who's interested in building valuable online content to find your ideal client?

My name is Alina Bonn, and I'm the Founder of Agency 94. We provide copywriting and digital marketing solutions for professional speakers, authors and consultants.

I’d like to share with you five tips on how you can ensure that your content strategy is successful and valuable to your audience.

Step #1: Conduct SEO Keyword Research

As you probably know, “SEO” stands for “Search-Engine-Optimization.”

These are the keywords that Google, YouTube and other search engines find that are related to your services.

For example, for my company, I would select: “marketing, digital marketing, copywriting, social media marketing, etc.”

You’ll want to gather a list of keywords related to your business and ensure that the content that you're producing on your website includes those keywords.

That way, Google can populate content related to these keywords from your website.

Step #2: Turn Your SEO Keywords Into Content Titles

I like to use this guide from Inc. Magazine to help me create titles for my content. You can create blog titles, how-to’s, beginner’s guides, etc.

This kind of content will be useful to your audience since you are providing information that will help them solve their problems.

You can position yourself as an authority in your industry and become the expert your clients rely on.

Step #3: Look at Your Competition

Look at your competitors. What kind of content are they producing?

You don’t want to copy them, but you want to see the type of content they are focusing on. If you can see the statistics on any of their content, which ones are doing well? Which ones are performing poorly?

Learn from their mistakes. Use their content as a gauge for you to focus your efforts.

What should you double-down on? What should you avoid?

How do you think you could do it better? What is something that they have missed?

Step #4: Make It Your Own

Now that you have an idea of your position in the marketplace and your competition, you want to see where you can add more value.

Don't get stuck in a rabbit hole of so much research that you don’t even get started.

You know your clients better than anyone else. You know exactly what they need to hear and at the end of the day.

Your clients are coming to work with you over your competition because they are attracted to you, your story, your experience and your knowledge.

They are seeking your expertise!

A lot of my clients are already well-known experts in their industries and help them transfer their real-life experience into an online presence.

For any readers who are just starting out in this industry, here is something to keep in mind:

Being labeled an “expert” means you know a little more than the person next to you. You don’t have to know it all, but just a little bit more. Perception is reality!

If you can create content that helps your clients solve their problems, you will become known as an expert in their mind.

Continuously giving them more and more useful information will help you gain more of their trust.

In my own business, I observe problems, read, experiment, learn, and translate my experiences to my other clients. This is how my expertise is built. This is how you can build your authority.

Don’t become so overwhelmed with everyone else out there. There is plenty of business for everyone!

Have you noticed as a consumer, a lot of the information from industry-leaders is basically the same? At the end of the day, people will attach to YOU… your story and your expertise because they relate to you.

It is critical for you to use your story to connect to your ideal client.

Step #5: Ask Your Audience

This is often overlooked, but you should survey your audience and ask them what they would like you to produce.

The more you can build genuine online relationships, people will feel a connection with you. People won’t listen to you until they know you care about them.

The more you can establish those kinds of relationships through your platform, the better!

You’ll build your reputation and your audiences’ loyalty to your brand. As marketers, we all know that the more trust you get, the better for business.

Try to establish an audience of 1,000 loyal fans and don’t forget about your current audience!

Final Thoughts:

Think about the common problems that you're noticing in your consultations or speaking engagements. What topics and trends keep coming up with your audience?

What is something that you wish everybody knew? Which topics do you wish everyone was educated on before you have to start customizing your solutions?

These pain points can help give you a solid foundation for creating your online content strategy.
